Kinski

2004

In February (Valentine’s Day), would you believe we played a Duran Duran cover (believe it was “Rio”)? It was for a leukemia benefit show called Dancing on the Valentine put on by our friend Jenny George, a leukemia survivor herself. This was the first of this annual event, now in it’s 13th year. For this endeavor we needed to enlist our guy Matt Olsen, aka Big Mo.

In March, Kinski plays The Sub Pop Showcase at South by Southwest (SxSW) in Austin, as well as Fuck by Fuck You (FxFY). Also, an showcase for Emperor Jones / Ba Da Bing Party at Church of the Friendly Ghost.

In June… Tour with Mission of Burma!!

Super nice, genuine people. A real thrill to be able to play with them. They didn’t miss a beat with their reunion. Picked up where they left on and continued to make great albums, like 2004’s ON OFF ON.

The documentary about their reunion is a must-see: Not A Photograph: The Mission of Burma Story

Also, after the tour, they completely surprised us by sending live lobsters. Classic!

In July, Seattle. Kawabata Makoto was in town, so just for fun, we did a jam with him at Aleph Studio with Randall Dunn recording. We ended up releasing a Mainliner cover that we did during these sessions years later. The link to the music is below.

Speaking of Kawabata Makoto, in August he joined the band for a special tour playing guitar with us,  doing Kinski songs and a bit of improv. The tour was an absolute blast. We made special shirts that sort of looked “disco”, in retrospect. Does anyone reading this still have one? Anyway, here’s the dates:

In September, Kinski plays a ridiculously stacked bill at the Showbox in Seattle called “No Vote Left Behind.” It was a get out the vote benefit with Mudhoney, David Cross, Avengers, and Pansy Division.
